Bringing an accountant’s attention to detail
An extraordinary career change
Normally when people decide to change career, it involves moving into a sector roughly similar to their own. This wasn’t the case for Kieran Pye, founder of Fusion Electrical, based in Croydon: ‘I was working as an accountant before Fusion and was always a two-hour drive away from anywhere I worked. I decided I had enough of the commute, so I took redundancy and had to decide what I wanted to do. It came to me when I was working around the house; I realised the enjoyment I was getting from it and knew I could build a business from this.’
Despite the unusual change of direction, Kieran was confident that his background in accounts would enable him to offer a better electrical service: ‘The paperwork side of the business runs very smoothly, as I obviously have done a lot of it in the past. We had a previous customer who was looking to sell their house and asked us for the paperwork for the electrical side and I was able to find it and send an email with it straight away – that’s not something you can get from all electricians. My philosophy is if you do your job well it makes your life a lot easier in the long run. It’s also a case of safety; I know I can sleep well at night because every job we do is done right and our customers are safe.’
Going virtual
Founded in 2006, Fusion has been working out of an office at home but wanted a professional image to present to domestic and commercial customers: ‘We chose the CapitalSpace virtual office provided by Croydon Business Centre as it provided everything we needed: there is telephone answering, it provides a business address rather than a residential address, and a place for us to have meetings. We feel that it adds value as it gives more to our customers.’
Future plans
Fusion provides a wide range of services, including electric car charging fitting, solar panel fitting, inspection and testing, but they’re also determined to deliver the best customer experience possible: ‘We aren’t chasing the money. Our service is all about making sure our customers get the best possible outcome. All our employees are of a certain standard and at the moment we’re training an apprentice who we hope will take on new skills and will be able to use them in the future.
‘Anything we do will be double checked and we’ll make sure you have all the paperwork you need. We also don’t waste your time and money as we won’t go to your house to do a whole check if we don’t think it’s necessary. If you have any queries, we’ll advise you on what to do first over the phone, for example unplugging everything in the house.’
