Shedding light on innovation: Brian Glynn’s journey to building EOS Lighting Solutions
Brian Glynn has worked in the lighting industry for over 30 years, having started off as an electrician, working in street lighting and lighting design. Over the years, he has transformed his frustrations with the industry into an award-winning business that prioritises customer satisfaction and innovative solutions.
A journey rooted in experience
Brian’s career began as an electrician in London, where he quickly discovered his passion for lighting. Over the years he has worked on some huge projects, such as the lighting in the Olympic Park, the M25 expansion, and he even spent time in India setting up a design team.
His experience in street lighting and consultancy paved the way for his eventual leap in entrepreneurship. Reflecting on his journey, he recalls, “After years of working in various roles, I realised there had to be a more efficient way to serve customers”. This is where his mantra, “There has to be a better way” came from.
In 2018, fuelled by his desire to have greater control over product offerings, Brian founded EOS. Their philosophy of ensuring customers receive exactly what they want, rather than settling for something of convenience, is what drives their tailored lighting solutions approach.
A customer-centric approach
What sets EOS apart is its innovative “just-in-time” manufacturing philosophy. Unlike traditional manufacturers that rely on pre-made products, Brian’s team focuses on building their products to order which then allows for an unprecedented level of customisation. “We don’t just sell boxes; we work closely with our customers to understand their aspirations and deliver exactly what they need,” he explains.
Brian’s passion for lighting extends beyond mere illumination. He sees it as a crucial element in enhancing safety and well-being. With the advent of smart lighting technology, many of EOS’s projects, such as those at Westfield shopping centres, prioritise the safety and comfort of workers and visitors. “By using Smart Technology to activate lights before someone enters a corridor, we can make women feel safer when they’re alone in the shopping centre at night,” Brian notes. “It’s just a small way that lighting can interact with your well-being that you’re probably not conscious of. That’s why I love this industry – because lighting is very subjective.”
Quality and local sourcing are at the heart of EOS’s operations. As a proud member of Made in Britain, Brian emphasises that sourcing components locally ensures superior product quality. “This commitment to British manufacturing is what truly sets us apart,” he states. By controlling every aspect of production, EOS can guarantee the highest standards for their customers, further solidifying their reputation in the industry.
It’s these small details that have led to EOS gaining three awards in the last two years, being awarded the Best British Lighting Manufacturer in the Southeast of England in 2023, British Lighting Manufacturer of the Year and the Customer Care Excellence Award both this year.
Finding a home at Greenway
EOS was founded nearly seven years ago, and for five of those they’ve been at the Greenway Business Centre. Brian emphasised the importance of having his own space: “We have our own front door, so we have people come and go as we please. I really like that. It makes you feel independent as a company.” He also went on to say that despite this independence, he gets the perks of “all the facilities that come with the reception team. If we’re not here and a customer arrives, we can divert them to reception” where they will be looked after.
Some of the other perks Brian makes use of include hosting a product launch in the large meeting rooms. “The great thing about Greenway is its flexibility,” he says. Being able to use the facilities while only having to maintain his unit has been invaluable.
Looking to the future
As EOS approaches its seventh anniversary, Brian is focused on scaling the business further. His plans include expanding the team and enhancing their online presence, while continuing to innovate within the lighting sector. Brian’s journey from electrician to entrepreneur exemplifies how passion and dedication can illuminate a path to success. With a strong commitment to customer satisfaction and quality, EOS is well-positioned for continued growth in the dynamic world of lighting solutions.
