From freelancer to founder: Jamie Pitt’s journey with Long Story Short Productions
Jamie Pitt, the founder of Long Story Short Productions, has transformed his seven-year freelance career into a video production company. With experience working on projects for industry giants like Netflix, Google, and the NHS, Jamie decided it was time to take the leap and establish his own production house two and a half years ago.
Carving a niche: Purpose-driven video production
Long Story Short Productions’ are an “all-inclusive video production company making bit-sized videos for brands, companies and charities”. Rather than working as a supplier of content, Jamie likes to work with his clients as a partner, using his knowledge of marketing and social media to bring ideas to the table that may benefit an organisation. One of types of videos they make are what they describe as ‘hero films’. These videos are created to be “standout pieces of content that can live on their customers website or can be pinned on their Instagram”. They serve as a powerful visual storytelling tool to encapsulate a company’s essence, products or services, bringing long-lasting value to their customers. Jamie’s expertise and experience has certainly paid off, leading Long Story Short to work alongside an impressive roster of clients including Odeon Cinemas, Cravendale, Lionsgate, Nest Pensions and GSK.
Long Story Short take a different approach to many other businesses as it has “always had a freelancer model”. With Jamie at the core, he has a talented group of freelancers who he brings on board on a per project basis. This ensures he has the right skill set for each project, as well as providing more flexible working environment for his team. A freelancer model also allows Jamie to keep costs low so there are fewer overheads to pass on to the clients, making it a win-win for everyone.
Global Reach, local production
While Long Story Short’s projects take them around the world, from Snowdonia to Uganda, they also make excellent use of their office space as a mini-studio. Jamie and his team regularly produce and film their own social media content within the office to keep their skills sharp and lead by example. This dual approach allows them to maintain a global perspective while also maximising the potential of their local workspace
Moving to Croydon
Long Story Short moved into Capital Space’s business centre in Croydon, from Clapham. Jamie wasn’t impressed by the majority of new office spaces he saw, but when he discovered Capital Space, he found it to be “clean, spacious and secure”.
This security means he doesn’t have to worry about the admin side of owning an office space. Most importantly though he said, “they had a unit that was the right size for me at the stage the business is in right now”.
The variety of unit sizes allows business owners like Jamie to choose a space that is perfect for them. Capital Spaces’ rolling one month contract was also a positive for Jamie, as it allows him to expand into a bigger unit as the business continues to grow.
Looking into the future
As Long Story Short Productions enters its next phase, Jamie is shifting the company’s focus from rapid expansion to more targeted growth. When asked where he sees the future of the company going, he says that: “We want to do more of what we take pride in. Working for charities, working in the healthcare and education sector. We like taking on those kinds of projects that can help to play a small part in making an impact in people’s lives”.
He even expressed his excitement about being in the Croydon centre as he said: “There’s a fantastic range of businesses here and it’d really interesting to connect with them”.
Jamie’s passion for his work will clearly be reflected in his future success at Croydon.
