How Pure Movement Pilates is transforming lives through classical practice and connection
Did you know that Pilates originated with a man named Joseph Pilates and that much of what is taught today diverges from his original methods? At Pure Movement Pilates, authenticity is at the heart of everything they do. Situated in Croydon’s Capital Business Centre, this classical Pilates studio is far more than just a place to exercise—it is a haven for people looking to reconnect with their bodies and build confidence in their movement. Founded by Karen Prato, Pure Movement Pilates offers clients the chance to experience Pilates as it was truly intended, from bespoke one-to-one sessions to group classes and personal training.
A studio that focuses on authentic Pilates
Pure Movement Pilates remains true to the original works of Joseph Pilates. Karen explains that the Pilates industry has become flooded with interpretations that often stray from its roots. However, at Pure Movement, everything—from the teaching to the equipment—is based on the classical methodology. Karen’s training, which included two apprenticeships, reflects her pursuit of authenticity. She even shipped her equipment from New York to ensure it adhered to the original designs.
“When people come to my studio, I want them to experience Pilates as it was meant to be,” Karen says. “It’s about self-discovery and control over your body. Many clients come in with prior experience, but they’re often amazed at how different and transformative classical Pilates can be.”
The studio’s personalised approach ensures that clients, whether beginners or experienced practitioners feel challenged and supported. From one-on-one sessions to group classes, Karen’s emphasis on building confidence and mastering movement has even inspired some of her clients to become teachers for the studio.
An unconventional start into the fitness industry
Karen began her career as a croupier in casinos, working on cruise ships and in the Bahamas, yet her passion for fitness eventually led her to aerobics and personal training. After gaining experience in various gyms and developing her skills, Karen discovered Pilates. Recognising its potential to help people connect with their bodies, she opened her first studio in 2006.
Celebrating 12 years at Capital Space
For the past 12 to 13 years, Karen has been in the Capital Business Centre in Croydon.
“I used to pass by the centre all the time,” she recalls. “I thought I wanted to be in there and when a small unit came up, with its own door downstairs I took it. I like it, my clients love it. The team are really good, and really helpful and it feels like a community. I feel comfortable and my equipment is safe here”.
Building community through movement
The spirit of community is at the core of Pure Movement Pilates and Karen has cultivated an environment where clients feel welcomed and supported. Long-standing clients, some of whom have been with her for over 20 years, often help newcomers settle in and form friendships. “It’s amazing to see how connections unfold in our sessions,” Karen says, “We’ve even celebrated together with events like our Christmas party. It’s more than a studio; it’s a community.”
Importance of constantly learning
Karen’s vision for the future focuses on growth without losing the personal touch that makes her studio unique. She is passionate about continuous learning—both for herself and her teachers—to ensure her clients receive the best possible experience. “I’m a lifelong learner,” she explains. “My goal is to expand our knowledge as teachers and improve the quality of our classes while maintaining the strong community feel we’ve built.”
Advice for aspiring Pilates and fitness entrepreneurs
For those looking to follow in her footsteps, Karen offers sage advice: “Do your research. Pilates is a technique and a system of exercise, not just a buzzword. Find reliable educators and question everything to ensure you’re offering something truly valuable. Ultimately, people won’t remember the exercises as much as how you made them feel, so focus on creating a positive and memorable experience”.
Pure Movement Pilates is a shining example of how passion, authenticity, and community can come together to create a thriving business. At Capital Space, Karen has found the perfect base to continue growing her studio and helping her clients reconnect with the joy of movement.
