Earth Day: 22nd April 2022
Every year on the 22nd of April, Earth Day brings millions of people together for environmental action. The day has grown from its inception in 1970 to a worldwide event, often spanning multiple days in some places. Earth Day is a good time to reflect on both the vulnerability and the value of our eco-system, so here we discuss how shared workspaces can help make SMEs greener.
How is Earth Day celebrated?
Every year, Earth Day has several themes that bring a new focus to different environmental concerns. For 2022, they are:
- Volunteers: Millions of people across the globe are part of Earth Day but the aim is for this continue and to integrate into everyday life. Members of communities are encouraged to care for where they live from litter-picking to growing new trees.
- Earth artists: Art can play an important role in growing awareness of the environment and the positive and negative impact humans can have on it.
- Education: Teaching the next generation is the only way we can continue to protect the environment.
Earth Day: a history
Earth Day has been running for over 50 years and has been the catalyst for other environmental movements and events. Here is a brief history:
- In 1970 , US senator Gaylord Nelson called for the creation of an environmental agency. Students from thousands of universities and schools protested in support of Nelson. This was on the 22nd April, becoming the first Earth Day.
- Two years on, the Environmental Protection Agencywas created.
- 1990 saw the Earth Day reach a worldwide audience with over 140 countries taking part.
- In 1995 Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
- 2020 was the 50th anniversary of Earth Day taking a digital form due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
How shared working spaces benefit the environment
We all would like to live a greener life, but many of us don’t realise how much where you work can have an impact on the environment. With businesses working under the same roof, resources are shared, reducing the overall impact on the environment. Whether that is less carbon emissions spent on building additional printers or less water used with a shared dishwasher, it all adds up to a more efficient and greener way to run your business.
How Capital Space plays their part
When it comes to our customers, the majority live within five miles of their business centre. This means less time, money and carbon-emissions spent on getting to work. The locality of our centres is what makes the community so strong, and we are proud to say that our customers are an eco-conscious bunch!
As a business, we are continually looking to improve our eco credentials and late last year, with help from our customers and staff, put together our Green Initiatives. We work hard to cultivate healthy eco-systems around our sites. New trees have been planted at our Churchill Square Business Centre with help from local government funding. Six of our centres have solar panels installed providing our customers sustainable energy all year round. Our waste disposal operator sorts and sifts through black bin bags when the general waste reaches their recycling plant. At this point plastics, paper, shredded paper, glass, food waste and aluminium are then recycled where possible.
Feel virtuous with a virtual office
Remote working options are available at seven of our centres, providing professional business addresses for our customers. A great option for companies looking to expand their services into new areas without having to consider the eco-implications of sending existing staff to work from locations further afield. Virtual offices save time, money and most importantly lower carbon footprints. With no commute, reduced power consumption and minimal office supplies the virtual office option is a real win for the environment!
Our green and eco-friendly initiatives are making a difference to our energy consumption and the more we develop in the future, the more energy we will save. If you’re a green-friendly business looking for a like-minded office space provider, please get in touch .
