Quarterly round up of our sustainability initiatives
Our team of Eco-Champions have been busy implementing and brainstorming lots of new ways we can make Capital Space more eco-friendly and reduce our carbon footprint. We know how important demonstrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) is for our customers, so we do our bit for the environment to help them meet that goal.
Recycling
Lost property: a collection of reading glasses which have been left unclaimed at Churchill Square Business Centre has been donated to a local opticians who can recycle them.
Freecycle: our Greenway Business Centre has registered with Freecycle, a nationwide initiative which provides a platform for local recycling. The old glasses and jugs from Greenway’s meeting rooms, which have been replaced with new ones, have been listed so that someone else can make use of them.
Coffee recycling: Milton Keynes is using recyclable cardboard trays to dry out coffee grounds so they can be used as fertiliser.
Pallet recycling: Croydon has invited gardeners from the adjoining local allotments to collect unwanted pallets from the site so that they can be reused.
Charity donations: pictures which once hung in Chelmsford’s meeting room have been donated to a local charity shop.
Waste recycling: Greenway has seen an increase in recycling as a result of new kitchen bins and posters to help customers break their habit of throwing food waste in the bin. Chelmsford is investigating ways to incorporate food waste recycling into the new café. Milton Keynes has seen a good uptake in recycling as a result of new dual compartment bins.
Energy saving ideas
Lighting: Churchill Square Business Centre will be extending its alternate lights initiative into all its buildings this year, with some lights being permanently replaced with ceiling tiles. Additionally external light timers will be adjusted as the days are getting longer, combined with PIR sensors on the buildings, to ensure lights are only coming on when it’s dark and they are needed.
Docusign: since 2022, Capital Space’s use of Docusign (an online system for signing documents) has saved 22,579 pieces of paper, 6,922lb of carbon emissions, 8,683 gallons of water and 2,949lb of wood.
Taking it outdoors
Sittingbourne: bulbs planted last year flourished this spring and now there are plans for a wildflower meadow at St George’s Business Park.
Loughton: a family of blue tits has found a home in our bird box and flower beds have been topped up with compost and planted with lavender.
Chelmsford: bedding areas are being replanted in stages by a landscaper at Waterhouse Business Centre and a birdbox is being installed.
Greenway: the centre has made some purchases to conserve wildlife with two bird boxes and a bug hotel. A hedgehog house is also being investigated.
Kings Hill: Churchill Square has made a considerable investment in biodiversity by installing two bug houses and 12 bird boxes around the site. There are also new cherry trees outside reception which blossomed during April and May and are now in full leaf.
Milton Keynes: the team is looking to relocate their birdboxes so as to encourage nesting; they are also considering planting up more outdoor areas.
